Jennie Thorsteinson found her Guardian Angel

Jennie Thorsteinson found her Guardian Angel during a recent stay at the Almonte General Hospital.  Jennie was so thankful for the care that she received that she nominated Nicole Fitzpatrick for a Guardian Angel Pin.

“My nurse introduced herself saying ‘I’m Nicole your best friend from Perth.’ Then she proved it like a pro!”

“Nicole was so gentle every time she touched me. She never broke protocol while I was in isolation and that was a comfort. Because I was in isolation she sometimes called me on the phone to ask if I needed anything. When I would say I was fine, she would tell me a joke or give a funny weather report.”

“Nicole hovered nearby when my meal arrived. I was really thrilled the first few times the food arrived. I was hungry and eager to get better. Sadly, I was not able to eat more than a bit or two. When I stopped eating, Nicole would whip the tray away saying something nice like ‘Oh that was a good try – Don’t rush things!’ Then a moment later she would say “Can I bring you something else?” That was my clue to ask for an Ensure.

“Nicole made me feel safe, happy, valued, strong and capable. How anyone can do all that while under siege I have no idea!”

7 Guardian Angels

7 Guardian Angels

These Volunteer Services Committee volunteers have been faithfully meeting for several years, and performing many behind the scenes activities to support the Almonte General Hospital.  These women have done fundraising, decorated and undecorated the halls and units of AGH, bought Christmas gifts for the patients on Rosamond Wing, bought plants for the back garden and planted them, helped with the Volunteer Appreciation Event, and supported the Junior Volunteer program by sponsoring a bursary, and providing an honorarium to the Student Volunteer Leader.

They are women who can be counted on to come through and help the hospital whenever they are needed.  They are dedicated, kind and patient-focused.  They have contributed countless hours in service to AGH in their regular volunteer roles, and as members of the Volunteer Services Committee.

They are truly Guardian Angels for all that they do to support the Volunteer Program at Almonte General Hospital.  As the Volunteer Services Committee restructures, these pins are presented by Chair Mary Dillabaugh, to honour their contribution.  We know that they will continue to give their time and talents in a different way, with the evolution and restructuring of Volunteer Services.

Thank you to each of you for your gift of your time and energy.

Gretta Bradley – Guardian Angel

Gretta Bradley – Guardian Angel

Gretta Bradley was presented with an Angel Pin by Joy Delahunt, a former AGH-FVM Foundation Board member and volunteer, during the 3rd annual Paddle for Almonte General Hospital. Gretta has been a longstanding volunteer with the Hospital and has been helping to lead the organizing committee of the event for the past three years.

The Paddle for Almonte General Hospital event has grown into an enjoyable and successful fundraising event for the entire family with all proceeds going to the Almonte General Hospital Fairview Manor Foundation.  The success of this event would not be possible without the hard work, commitment and leadership provided by Gretta and her team of volunteers.

Al Roberts, Managing Director of the AGH-FVM Foundation commented that Angel pins are awarded to individuals who have gone “above and beyond the call of duty in terms of supporting the Hospital.”

Pictured are Gretta Bradley and her team racing their homemade raft “The Grace O’Malley” named after an Irish Pirate Queen who was described as a fearless leader and a courageous woman.

Janet McGonigal – Guardian Angel

Janet McGonigal – Guardian Angel

“Janet is my special guardian angel!”

“Janet recognized that the pain from an incorrect diagnosis of Spinal Stenosis was actually related to a hip problem which resulted in me having hip replacement surgery.

I was in great pain and incapacitated. Janet saw me weekly and did everything to assist and deflect my pain. Janet always came with new and advanced ways of treating me.

Janet McGonigal is an incredible asset to the Almonte General Hospital Physiotherapy Department. Thank you for everything Janet!”
