Giving Thanks

Friday, Oct. 9, 2015

Close to 70 donors, board members and senior Hospital staff gathered in the Old Fairview Manor dining room on the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 7 for a Thanksgiving Donor Reception.

Hosted by Hospital Board Chair Paul Virgin and Hospital and Manor Foundation Chair Art Solomonian, the Foundation’s most generous donors were thanked for their ongoing support.  Hospital President  & CEO Mary Wilson Trider, who emceed the event, enumerated an impressive list of medical and personal support equipment that was purchased last year with the approximately $250,000 provided through the Foundation.

The new Managing Director of the Foundation, Al Roberts, thanked everyone for the warm welcome he has received since joining the organization in July.  Roberts used his opportunity at the podium to interview the Hospital’s Chief of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dr. Bahaa Awwad, about the exciting future he sees for the growing program.

Dr. Awwad, who came to Almonte General Hospital in January of this year, expressed his pride in being a member of the AGH team.   Key investments in Diagnostic Imaging, Surgery, and Anaesthesia by the Hospital will help to achieve his vision for increasing the number of births in the Birthing Unit (Ranked #1 in Ontario for patient satisfaction) and developing a more comprehensive Women’s Health program.

Ian Keith Taylor General Trust matches gifts

Ian Keith (Ike) Taylor passed away on November 22, 2009, but his legacy has continued to live on at the Almonte General Hospital/Fairview Manor for many years thanks to a trust he established prior to his death.

This year, the Trustees of Mr. Taylor’s General Trust are offering to match all donations made to the AGH-FVM Foundation up to a total of $10,000.

“Mr. Taylor thought very highly of the Hospital and Manor,” said Mr. Lewis McCowell, Partner with Gibsons LLP and one of the fund’s trustees. “Ike really appreciated the care he received from doctors, nurses, caregivers and staff at the Manor.”

After retiring, Mr. Taylor built a home in Ramsay Township for himself and his dog Sam.  Having lived in the community for many years, he appreciated how wonderful it was to have safe, high- quality health care close to home.

“We are so thankful to the Trustees of Mr. Taylor’s Trust for the generous offer to match donations,” said Art Solomonian, Board Chair, AGH-FVM Foundation. “Their philanthropic leadership will really make a difference to the care provided at both the Hospital and Manor.”

Any donation received at the Foundation on or before Tuesday, Dec. 15 will be matched by the Ian Keith Taylor General Trust, up to a total contribution of $10,000.

Donations can be made online at: www.almontehospitalfoundation.com, phoned in at 613-256-2500 ext. 2296 or mailed to AGH-FVM Foundation, 75 Spring St., Almonte, ON K0A 1A0.

Funds raised will help fund the purchase of new equipment like a digital x-ray machine or provide staff training in areas such as caring for patients and residents with dementia.

Foundation welcomes new Managing Director

The Board of Directors of the AGH-FVM Foundation has appointed veteran fundraiser Al Roberts as the Foundation’s Managing Director. He will join Development Co-ordinator Louise Beckinsale on July 6 and looks forward to meeting hospital and manor staff and volunteers, community supporters and local business leaders.

Al brings 30 years of marketing, communications and fundraising experience to his new role.  He has successfully raised money for CHEO, the Ottawa Public Library and Roger’s House (with the Sens Foundation).    Recently as the Director of Philanthropy for the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation, he has focused his efforts on working with generous community members who wish to support acute care for the elderly and new equipment for Ottawa’s west-end hospital.

Married with two grown sons, Al is no stranger to the Hospital or the area.  His wife Janine has worked as a nurse in the Obstetrics department for five years.  When not working they spend a lot of time with family and friends at their cottage outside of Perth.

“Al is really looking forward to working with the residents of Almonte and the surrounding area to find ways for them to invest in the care provided by both the Hospital and Manor,” said Art Solomonian, Chair of the Foundation Board.  “He spoke at length during his interviews about how much he enjoys working with volunteers, donors, companies and organizations to find meaningful ways for them to support their local health-care providers.”

Roberts plans to spend a great deal of time during his first few months getting out and meeting local residents.  “Please make a point of introducing yourself and sharing your Hospital or Manor connection with me,” he said when asked how Hospital and Manor supporters can help him with the challenging role into which he’s coming.  To contact Al please call 613-256-2500 ext. 2297 after July 6.

Thanks to our Donors for your Generosity

By Mary Wilson Trider

At the Hospital’s Annual General Meeting on June 1st, Board Chair Paul Virgin, Finance Committee Chair Rod Hall and I took the opportunity to thank the Almonte General Hospital/Fairview Manor Foundation’s donors for their contributions during the 2014/15 fiscal year.  As many of you are aware, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care provides funding for day-to-day operating costs and for bricks and mortar.  Funding for equipment is the responsibility of communities.

Your generosity allowed the Hospital and Manor to purchase over $245,000 of new and replacement equipment over the past year.

Donors, your gifts have had a positive impact on the quality of care and comfort of patients, residents and their families.  Thank you for your tremendous support.

Thanks are also due to the members of the Almonte General Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, who contribute countless volunteer hours in support of fundraising for the Hospital and Fairview Manor.  In particular, I would like to recognize Board Chair Al Lunney, Finance Committee Chair Art Levi and Fundraiser Extraordinare Margaret Brunton, who stepped down from the Foundation Board earlier this month.  Their commitment of time, energy and talent was greatly appreciated.

Tina McLelland, Administrative Angel

Tina McLelland, Executive Assistant to the President and CEO was surprised with a Guardian Angel pin by a co-worker last week.

Tina is known as the go to person for anything administrative or well…golf.  For one staff member Tina made the difference between a difficult first year and a smooth transition into a new position.  Even though she holds a demanding role, Tina always shared information, engaged and included her co-worker in internal social activities, covered off duties and added her expertise to projects.  Congratulations Tina!

Tina has been a valued member of the AGH-FVM team since August 2009.
